Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

2 - 4 month Collective Living Internship at the Beehive in Vancouver

Do you want to learn and experience how to live in an urban intentional community?
If you are interested in setting up a collective house or intentional
community, this internship may be the perfect opportunity to learn the
systems and skills to make it flourish.

The Beehive is an established collective house located just off Commercial Drive.  We believe that mutual support in the domestic
realm fosters stronger individuals and stronger communities.
Collective living is a powerful form of activism, allowing us to
exercise our values of social and environmental justice right in the
home. Together, we hold safe space for individual and collective
growth.  Recently, the Beehive spearheaded a day of workshops
about collective houses, and now gives presentations to share our
experiences with the greater community. Learn more about the house at http://thebeehivehouse.blogspot.com/

We are offering an opportunity for one individual to learn experientially by living in community for up to 4 months.
The internship is available from July 1st - October 31st but we are flexible with the start and end dates although
we do require a six-week minimum to fully engage in our processes.  The
most important thing is to find the right person. Any age welcome.

You would be the 6th adult in the home, together with one cat, and one kid who comes a few days per week.
There is a guest room for friends and visitors.  Residents share food, space, stuff, housework, rent and many values.

Cost is negotiable depending on income and length of stay, between $800 (6
weeks) and $2000 (4 months).  This covers complete room and board
including furnished room, food, phone with long distance, internet,
laundry and your very own loaned bicycle if needed.

In joining us, some of the things you would be involved in are:
  • Delicious vegan dinners every night with ethically sourced food (local, home-grown, CSA, organic, dumpstered, unprocessed and/or minimally
packaged).  The house is vegetarian but dinners are vegan to be
accessible to all.  Eating together is one of the great joys of
collective living, and since the Beehive's inception it has been a
central priority of the house.  We share sit-down dinners almost every
night of the week which fosters a connection and friendship that is the
    real foundation of our household.
  • Cooking one night a week for everyone and being home for dinners at least half the time.
  • Gardening in our extensive food gardens if you have green thumb or want to grow one!
  • Processing food – making preserves, fermented foods, sprouts, soup stock, etc.
  • Regular, organized housework to maintain our community
  • Meaningful conversation  (maybe somethimes with the 4 yr. old kid!) and open communication.
  • A weekly house meeting lasting 1.5 hours based on consensus
  • Having friends and guests over for dinners and overnight visits in the guest room
  • Occasional larger social events such as potlucks, meetings or birthday parties
  • Weekly 30-minute meditation session on Tuesdays (optional)
  • A happy, bike-based home!

Overall, we exercise simple, economical and environmentally friendly living. We are social but not a party home, and the house is usually quiet and
calm in the evenings.

If you are interested and excited to consider joining our home, please call or email Elisa and/or Sara.

We would like to learn what you hope to gain from living in community, if
you have any relevant experience, and what skills and passions you
might bring to the collective during your stay.

The next step would be a phone conversation, followed by a scheduled diner at the house for us to get to know each other and see
whether the fit is right.

Thanks!
~Sara and Elisa on behalf of the Beehive Collective House.

Transportation

If you have to leave your village, how will you get where you want to go? By car? Preferably not, both for your wallet and the earth’s sake. This category is for all discussions relating to how we all get around.

Housing

A human right? After food, most feel shelter is the most important necessity. A place of shelter is also the start of a community. This category is for all things relating to shelter, housing, affordable housing, homes, renewable heating systems, green buildings, heritage, and our built environment in general.
