Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities
Resilience has been a buzz word for discussing change and used often for the Transition Network in their movement. What first originated in ecology in the 1960/70s has now broadened to fit situations in other sectors. As a general definition, resilience is the ability of a system (an ecosystem, an economic system, a culture) to withstand shocks, and upheavals, to evolve and adapt without losing its basic cohesion and form. There are two ways to measure resiliency: the ability to withstand a shock/disturbance and not switch to another state, and/or how fast can the system recover after the disturbance. In some cases, a disturbance in the system has the potential to create opportunity for innovation and development.
Nowadays, resilience has become the basis of community initiatives facing climate change, social justice and mental health. The ability of local communities coping with these crises has been gaining increasing attention. For example, transition societies like Village Vancouver (VV), who believe building a resilient community is an opportunity for economic and social growth. Our action should lead to healthier and more vibrant communities while reducing the vulnerability to risk. VVs approach to community resilience is to strengthen relationships between community members and empower them to improve their surroundings. This is achieved by VV promoting activities that encourage a shift. Community potlucks provide a space where neighbours can casually connect, workshops provide individuals with hands-on skills, recycling depot provide access to recycling previously unavailable and community gardens provide a space where one can connect (both with people and the land) and work at the same time. What this accomplishes is a community that is able to tackle their challenges while working cohesively to transition to a more environmentally sustainable community.
