Profile Information

In which Vancouver neighbourhood or other community do you live?
Downtown East Side, Kitsilano
Please tell us which areas of Transition interest you. For example: growing more food/urban agriculture, relocalizing our economy/local currency, Permaculture, transit, energy efficient buildings, the arts, urban homesteading, preserving seed diversity, potlucks, outreach, organizing events, community-building, having fun while saving the world, or...
Potlucks, encouragement to bike more, drive less; gardening; composting, arts and celebrations - more parties and parades, please!
There's a saying that "Transition is not a spectator sport". It's true! Village Vancouver runs on people power, and engaging in activities and projects together helps us accomplish more. Which groups, networks, neighbourhood villages, or projects do you think you might be interested in getting involved with? And what knowledge, skills, resources or other assets can you bring to the mix? (Don't be bashful!)
Yes, I help with the Kits Village organizing.
What would you like to see improved in Vancouver or in your community regarding sustainability or resiliency? Do you have an idea for a new Transition project or activity?
I like the City's focus on greenest city and also the neighbourhood focus. It's great that the Vancouver Foundation have extended their neighbourhood small grants to the westside - it supports people like me - and probably you - to do some community building without trying to scrape $$ together or ask for contributions.
I agree to read and abide by the Site Guidelines under the About tab on the navigation bar, remaining respectful in all communications on this web site.

Artists in Our Midst - getting ready

Posted on April 28, 2010 at 8:13am 0 Comments

I'm exhibiting as part of Artists in Our Midst "art walk" on the westside for the second time this year.

Last year, I coordinated 3 other artists and had our work in the common room of my co-op. This year I decided to just do it in my apartment. I'm told that I'll get fewer people - people like to go to the group shows and also you have to go in the apartment and up a flight of stairs, which will deter some folks - mobility issues, energy or just feels too private.

I'm not nearly ready… Continue

Rainy days and seedlings

Posted on March 16, 2010 at 9:56pm 0 Comments

Not fabulous gardening weather, but I've been out trying to eradicate the bluebells and considering where we can do more edible landscaping at my coop building.

On Sunday, I did a presentation at the Unitarian church using seeds/gardening as metaphor for "growing things in our own lives, our community and our city."

I called it:

radish acts of kindness and sweetpea acts of beauty

I learned that the phrase random acts, etc. is attributed to Anne Herbert and found some additional… Continue

Posted on March 2, 2010 at 11:54am 0 Comments

Hi, I'm eager to get engaged with Village Vancouver events. I know several of the steering committee members and live in Kits in a Housing Coop.
We have a common room and could host a Kits spaghetti dinner.
I'm organizing a block party for Carfree Days in Kits - on Sunday, June 20. You're all invited.

Hi Mary,

I can definitely share some more kefir with you. If you're not using them I think that they can be chilled in the fridge (for up to a month at least) or frozen or dried (although, I've never personally tried either of these two options).

Unfortunately I've been out of town for the last 5 weeks, so my kefir have been dormant and need to be revived. I wish I could bring something to Car Free Day in Kits, but I just don't have anything right now. I'll let you know when there are some grains to share though!

Cheers,
Elaine

Hi Mary,

You might also want to post the 5th Ave micro-village announcement as a new discussion or comment, so more Kits Villagers are aware of it.

Cheers,
Ross

As I learn about how this process works, I am certain that I will want to start another circle for those who are interested. You are welcome to come tonight (May 2).
