A Bit About Me

Hi there,

My name is Asia. I live near Main and King Edward in a big old house with a small front garden. I live with my husband Nate (Nathaniel), my parents Jean and Renee, my brother Lucas and his girlfriend Maddie. We also have a tenant, she has a big dog named Seamus. In the backyard we keep chickens and have some additional garden space.

Early in 2009 Nate built me my first veggie garden. At first I was a little reluctant, but coming home every day, passing all those green growing things got me interested; It wasn't long before I was weeding, watering, learning and planning.

Spring of 2010 we brought home a box of mixed chicks. It's been a bumpy ride navigating slipped tendon, crowing cockerels, intestinal worms and raccoons. We’ve learned much with the help of some folks here at Village Vancouver (Thanks Ross, Jordan Maynard, Julia Smith and others). We’ve been involved in a couple of Chicken 101 workshops, and were featured in the WestEnder last June http://www.westender.com/articles/entry/chickens-come-home-to-roost/ along with our friends Nayt and Julia. Over Christmas, we hatched some more chicks, this time from eggs in an incubator.

We were recently featured again in the WestEnder, this time representing Village Vancouver, http://www.westender.com/articles/entry/cover-story-it-takes-a-village along with Ross Moster. It was a great honor and a big incentive “to get more involved”. This year we are planning to expand our vegetable garden to a friend’s yard, learn how to keep honeybees and build a greenhouse.

Hi Asia,

No problem, I was giving a presentation on beekeeping and thought about extending the invite to see if you wanted to take part as well. All went well anywho. If more opportunities arise, would you be interested? I can give you a call.

Also, just checked-in on VV (I'm an internet flake too...) and noticed you're ad on the beekeepers page. I may be able to help if you are still looking. All my hives are raised naturally and doing very well. Let me know, maybe we can work a trade (as I am looking for chicken stuff too!).

Asia,

I hope you can make it on Monday night (very nearby) to our Seed Sharing Potluck and open Meetup (everyone invited).  We can talk about your raised bed/greenhouse project. I am busy right now building two greenhouses, both leantos set above raised beds adjacent to buildings.  I'll bring drawings.

I have been collecting discarded sliding glass doors, which give you 4 panes of tempered glass at 76x28 to 76x48 inches each (depending on the door).  I also found someone who salvages glass this same way for a living, and he sells sheets of tempered glass 76x28, 76x34, and 76x48 inches at under $20 each.  I plan to organize a pickup (in Burnaby) soon, and maybe we could combine an "order." and I could drop it by your house after picking it up.

Asia,

Welcome to the Main Street 'Hood. It is great to have such perfect Transition people join with us.

We have a lot going on in the next two weeks on Main Street. We have a big Seed Sharing meeting on Monday, the 21st, at Cityview Church (http://www.villagevancouver.ca/events/village-vancouver-meetup-and), and then we've invited Mark Lakeman from Portland's City Repair project to come to Vancouver on the 25th and 26th to demonstrate how communities change their public spaces to suit their needs (http://www.villagevancouver.ca/events/ecodreaming-vancouver-event).

Definitely come to the Seed Sharing event where we'll have dozens of different organic, locally-produded and locally-adapted food crop seeds to share for free. We have a few beneficial flower seeds to share as well.

Let's change our world!

Randy
