Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

Our coop is 90% complete.  We'd like to get 4 good brown egg layers.  They don't have to be fancy ladies...just in good health.  Where would you all recommend getting them from?  We are open to adoption as well.

Check with the Vancouver Pound.  Suzy McKay seems to be the coordinator of chicken adoptions there.

Alternatively, Fraser Valley Auctions in Langley has a poultry sale every Saturday morning (starting around 9am).  It's fun to go and watch even if you're not in a buying mood.  You can also order chicks from places like Buckerfields but it'll be in the order of six or so months before you see any egg production.

Thanks for the information!

Hi all,

I'm in the same boat as Leanne, but probably looking for 3 birds sometime in April/May.  In my ideal world, breeds I'm interested in are Americauna (or other "easter-eggers"), silver-laced wyandotte, plymouth barred rocks, rhode island reds, australorps.... basically docile birds suited to a backyard flock.

Where does one get laying (or just about to lay) hens?  I see lots of chicks for sale on craigslist, but as I will have a new baby in June I would like to forego chicks this time around and start with laying ladies.

Cheers!

-Kristi, Ben, and sprout (also coming soon)

I'm due in June too!   Perhaps we could carpool out to the Saturday chicken sale in Langley one of these weekends?

We'll be picking up some more layers (6-9 months old) in the next couple weeks and could get some extras for you. Or, if you prefer, we have some chicks with more coming next week if you'd like to hand raise them. I'm picking up some fancy breed chicks in the next few weeks if you're feeling adventurous :)

The Richmond and Vancouver animal control people call me when they get chickens in but fortunately that doesn't happen very often.

Here are the breeds I currently have to choose from:

Ameraucana (layer of green and blue eggs)
Standard Blue Cochin (big friendly balls of feathers)
Standard Buff Cochin (the Great Danes of the chicken world)
Standard Golden Laced Polish (fabulous top knot “hair-do”)
Silver Laced Wyandotte (good layer of large eggs)
Black Australorp (big bird with shiny feathers)
Standard Light Brahma (feathered legs and feet)
Standard Buff Brahma (golden buff with black markings)
Standard Dark Brahma (very heavy breed)
Welsummer (chocolate coloured eggs)
Buff Orpington (favourite heritage breed)
Speckled Sussex (chocolate brown eggs with speckled spots)
Rhode Island Red (very prolific egg layer)
Blue Silkies (mixed genders) (the Persian cat of the chicken world)
Red Silkies (mixed genders) (almost like fur rather than feathers)
Buff Silkies (mixed genders) (very friendly birds)
Frizzle (mixed genders) (curly feathers)
Mille Fleur (mixed genders) (bantam breed with feathered feet)
Cuckoo Marans (deep dark chocolate brown egg layers from France)

FRIZZLE COCHIN – REDS, BLACKS & WHITES (MIXED GENDERS)
BLUE LACED RED WYANDOTTES – VERY RARE COLOUR! (MIXED GENDERS)
SILVER LACED POLISH
WHITE CRESTED BLACK POLISH
Chantecler, Partridge EXTREMELY RARE AND ENDANGERED BREED!!!
Lakenvelder, Golden bird with striking black head, neck and tail

If there are a few people who want young hens, I don't mind raising them through the chick phase for you as I'll be doing some for myself anyway.

Wow Julia, quite the flock you have going on!  I think you're the same Julia that is hosting the pruning workshop next weekend, no?  If so, perhaps we can chat at that point.  I'd love to take you up on your offer but don't yet have my coop in order (likely not till April I don't think).

Hope to see you soon!

Cheers,

-Kristi

yup.... I'm the pruning workshop julia too. We have a larger coop in Richmond... not just our backyard coop. We sell eggs and meat to our neighbours so I get to have lots of feathered fun :) I have several good sources so just give me a shout whenever you're ready and I can help hook you up with some great birds. Cya at the workshop!
Awesome, thanks so much!  See you on the 6th.

Hi Julia,

Wow what an asset you are!  We're mainly interested in having a steady supply of brown eggs for the family.  We're practical people...top knots and fashion feathers not so important.

We should be ready in April for some birds...

May we contact you closer to the ready date?
Thanks lots,
Leanne

PS - Leanne, would love to meet you sometime, even if we don't head out to a Langley auction.  Good luck to you & your expanding family!

Hi Julia,

We are in the process of moving and won't be ready for chickens until early May. Could we ask you to rear 4 for us until then? We do have 4 and 6year old kids, so we would like a friendly lot:) Exciting eggs would be fun for them though...

Thanks,

Jana

Sorry, I only just noticed this message today. Do you have your chickens now?
