Dane Chauvel replied to Alyssa K's discussion Soggy Run in the group Chicken Coop Co-ops
"Living in Vancouver, most of us suffer from the same soggy (and, if you're not careful, smelly) chicken coop issues. I put gravel down, then put landscape mat on top of that, and then a mesh (either chicken wire or plastic mesh on top of that…"

Dane Chauvel replied to Surya Govender's discussion Pricing Chickens! in the group Chicken Coop Co-ops
"I think a good, young laying hen is worth $10.  If you're paying more than that, you are probably buying pedigree.  Pedigree is of value if you're planning on showing your birds but if they're solely being kept as pets or…"

Dane Chauvel replied to Caitlin Dorward's discussion egg with no shell? in the group Chicken Coop Co-ops Network
"The egg without the shell is not uncommon and is symptomatic of a calcium deficiency.  It is easily resolved by adding oyster shell to the diet of scratch and laying pellets.  A small bag of oyster shell can…"

Dane Chauvel commented on Ross Moster's group Chicken Coop Co-ops

Hi Dane,
I'm thinking of adding another hen or two to my pen. Do you still have a surplus? I'm hoping to be able to try one out to make sure she gets along with the other two reasonably well. We've gotten a few great blue eggs off the araucanna. She doesn't lay much, but they're beautiful.

A human right? After food, most feel shelter is the most important necessity. A place of shelter is also the start of a community. This category is for all things relating to shelter, housing, affordable housing, homes, renewable heating systems, green buildings, heritage, and our built environment in general.
