Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

Do you need help with composting? Setting up a worm bin? Questions about your compost bin?
Don't have a compost bin and would like to make deposits nearby?

Did you know that any Starbucks will give you their coffee grounds for your compost bin? (Red wriggler worms love coffee and coffee grounds around plants can deter aphids.)

This link to the City of Vancouver site encourages onsite composting even though you can also put uncooked fruits, vegetables, coffee and tea in the yard waste bins.

Recycle your food — Don't let it go to waste!

If you currently receive the City yard trimmings collection service, you will now be able to add uncooked fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and filters, teabags, and eggshells into your yard trimmings cart for composting.

If you already have a backyard composter, keep using it. It’s still the best way to compost since it saves on collection costs and energy use. If you are interested in obtaining a backyard compost
container, you may purchase one at the Vancouver South Transfer Station.

I (Mary Bennett maryinvancouver@gmail.com) love to share my enthusiasm for composting - and can always arrange some starter worms for you.  If you live near 5th and Trafalgar and want a place to put your food waste, I can offer our bin as well. Just let me know what you need.

I'm thinking helping people in Kits to set up compost bins and manage them might be an easy project for us to do for each other in the 'hood.
