Meaningful Movies takes a look in our E-Garbage

What happens to our end-of-life electronic devices?  Chances are, they end up in a community in Asia or Africa, posing a health hazard and an environmental risk to those who make a living extracting precious metals from them.

On Thursday, March 24 at 7pm, “Meaningful Movies” presents a free screening of Ghana: Digital Dumping Ground, an Emmy Award-winning documentary by UBC journalism students, which looks at how hundreds of millions of tonnes of e-waste from Western countries have created toxic dumps in some of the poorest areas of the world.  The evening will also include a panel discussion.

”Meaning Movies” is a free community event presented by the Hastings North Community Partners Group and sponsored in part by London Drugs.  Shows are each month at St David’s Church, 2475 Franklin Street, at 7pm (doors open at 6:30).  Popcorn and other refreshments are available at nominal cost from a concession operated by a different community group each month.  You are invited to bring your own coffee mug or water bottle—and perhaps a favorite blanket or pillow to sit on!  Donations to support this free movie series are gratefully accepted.

For more information about “Meaningful Movies”, please call Eric Harms (604.255.9458) or Michael Batten (604.253.8524).
