We have had zero eggs for about 4-5 months now - our gals just sit there with their legs crossed??? Last winter they stopped as well but not for this long.Any idea what might be the reason - we give them quite a bit of kitchen scraps but they go though several scoops of layer mash every week as well? We let them out at least once a week to dig around a bit.Cheers -…See More

"Hi Laura, Yep, all our toxic industrial habits are coming home to roost. If your hens are foraging or grazing on untested soil it is technically possible to end up with heavy metal in the eggs. I did a study on heavy metal uptake in bullrush plants…"

Lead in Eggs from Backyard Chickens (NYT)

Worries About Lead for New York City’s Garden-Fresh Eggs Michelle V. Agins/The New York TimesHomeowners who keep chickens in their backyards have little way of knowing whether their eggs might be contaminated unless they have them tested themselves. By JULIE SCELFO Published: October 8, 2012 19 CommentsTO the long list of food conundrums, add this one: new research has found elevated levels of lead in eggs from chickens in New York City’s public neighborhood gardens.Preliminary results from a…See More

Hello!

Since you have indicated Hastings-Sunrise as your neighbourhood location, I thought I would let you know that we are in the embryonic stages of creating a Hastings-Sunrise village and have set up a Village Group here at Village Vancouver to facilitate that process.

I am aware that there are lots of neighbourhood groups and activities already in place in Hastings Sunrise and hope that in some way a Hastings-Sunrise Village can help to provide some networking between groups rather than competing as another entity, but also can carry out activities that might be of interest to the other groups as well. Really, it's wide open as to what we do as a village entity... but we need participation to determine what that will be!

Please go over to the Groups page and go to the second page - there you will find Hastings Sunrise Village and can join up and participate in the discussion - and also feel free to post Hastings-Sunrise activities and events there for others to see.
