Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

Kiwassa Neighbourhood House has recently started a new group for youth called the Northeast Youth Action Committee.  The goal of the committee is to create a youth-driven group which will identify and carry out community development projects in the Hastings- Sunrise Neighbourhood.

The youth who are currently involved have identified the environment and issues of food sustainability as important to youth in this community, so it will be the focus of our first project.  We have decided that the project will be to restore the garden space at McDonald Elementary School (at Hastings and Victoria).  The school has a big beautiful garden space with lots of well- established plants.  However, in last year it has become quite neglected and overgrown with weeds.  It needs more work than the elementary students are able to provide, so we are going clean it up, plant it, and help the students develop a plan for how they can maintain it in the future.

Now we are looking for more youth people to lend a hand.  We especially want youth ages 12-19.  We will have some gardening/ farming experts come out and advise us so it will be a great opportunity to learn more about growing things.  We are looking for volunteers who just want to come out for a day and garden in the sun, and also those who want to make a longer commitment to help plan, carry out, and later evaluate the project.  If you are interested, or would like more information, please contact Katie Andersen, the Youth Programs Coordinator at Kiwassa Neighbourhood House: KatieA@kiwassa.ca or 604-254-5401 ext 223.
