Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

Certain veggies seem to thrive in our conditions and don't care if the spring was cold and wet. Yes, they are leeks and kale. Ever since I started planting these vegetables in my garden three years ago, I have never regretted these easy care plants. Both overwinter here no problem (with good drainage) and during the summer need occasional watering and not much else.

My kale plants keep on seeding themselves in my plot and when I harvest the young leaves, the plant just keeps on producing more.

Leek seedlings are so small that you need to make sure that you know where you've planted them. If you plant them too close, you can eat the extra plants. And if you allow them to flower (during the second year), you must harvest early otherwise they produce a woody stalk and you might as well leave them for the bees, which love their bulbous flower heads. I plant the seeds all year long as they make great soup and onion substitutes. Also, seeds do not keep more than 1-2 years, so need to be grown out. It's a good thing I love growing these majestic plants.

My harvest of 2 leeks and young kale leaves last night went into my curry cauliflower potato stew. What a savory dish that was.

Summer is almost here, Cylia
