In which Vancouver neighbourhood or other community do you live?
Grandview-Woodland
If you don't live in Vancouver or are in another neighbourhood or community we did not list, please tell us where home is.
I mean Commercial Drive between Hastings & 1st - is that Grandview-Woodland?
Please tell us which areas of Transition interest you. For example: growing more food/urban agriculture, relocalizing our economy/local currency, Permaculture, transit, energy efficient buildings, the arts, urban homesteading, preserving seed diversity, placemaking, potlucks, outreach, organizing events, community-building, having fun while saving the world, or...
Hi Ross, Karen here from the original Transition Town training. I'm finally signing on! I'm interested in all of it, but especially local food production, permaculture (intend to take a course this year), natural building, the potential of co-ops, the heart & soul work, fibre arts (knitting & spinning), and animals' welfare during the transition.
There's a saying that "Transition is not a spectator sport". It's true! Village Vancouver runs on people power, and engaging in activities and projects together helps us accomplish more. Which groups, networks, neighbourhood villages, or projects do you think you might be interested in getting involved with? And what knowledge, skills, resources or other assets can you bring to the mix? (Don't be bashful!)
(Yes, but I need to look over the list of working groups - can't see it from here.)
What would you like to see improved in Vancouver or in your community regarding sustainability or resiliency? Do you have an idea for a new Transition project or activity?
Transit and urban food production.

Hi Karen,

Great to see you at Michael's teach-in today! I notice that you live in Grandview-Woodland, (which happens to be my hood as well), and that you are interested in the heart-and-soul aspects of Transition. You may therefore be interested in the Macy Monday workshop taking place on Nov. 7th from 7pm-9:15pm at Salisbury and Adanac (details to be sent out/posted soon). The workshop will be based on the work of Joanna Macy and is being facilitated by Heather Talbot and Maureen Jack-LaCroix (from the Be the Change Earth Alliance).

Also, I would encourage you to join the Grandview-Woodland Village on Village Vancouver.  There hasn't been much going on at the village level for the past several months, but I am planning on getting things started again soon, and if you're part of the village page you will receive any notifications that go out.

Cheers!

Jordan

Welcome to the Local Economy Network!

We're always glad to see new faces in our group, and as co-convenor I thought I’d give you a summary of what we’ve been working on over the past few months and how you can get involved.

At our first meeting last October, it emerged that concept of community currencies was of great interest to the group, and we decided that we would begin the process of planning a local currency for the Dunbar neighbourhood as a pilot project . Community currencies are forms of money developed by and for a community for various reasons, including relocalising and stimulating the economy,  supporting community projects and non-profits, re-introducing a more social aspect to economic transactions, and more. Using the experiences gained from Dunbar, we hope to be able to eventually either expand the currency to other neighbourhoods, or replicate it to have multiple neighbourhood currencies throughout Vancouver.

Since that meeting, a number of members of this group (and beyond) has begun preparations for the Dunbar Dollar, which we are hoping to be able to launch in late spring/early summer this year. There is a lot to be done, so if you are interested in volunteering in any way please contact me at info@dunbardollar.com.

I should also add that, although community currency has been our primary focus over the past couple of months, it need not be the only project! There are many things that can be done to help create a saner and more localised economy,  so all ideas are welcome.

Our next LEN monthly meeting is on Monday, May 2nd from 6pm-8pm. If you would like to join us, please RSVP on the event page at http://www.villagevancouver.ca/events/local-economy-network-monthly-4.

I look forward to meeting you soon!

Hey Karen,

Welcome to VV!  Things are really cooking - over 125 people joined in January, we're starting seed saving collectives, launching a local currency, and the energy is great.

Based on the interests you've indicated, I'll send you a bunch of invites to join various groups & networks. Many are very active, others haven't really activated yet. Please feel free to join any or all of them. (Some pages are visible to anyone; some are only visible to members of the group.)

And yes, you're part of Grandview Woodland. The local transition village is having a a potluck this weekend. Here's the link. I'll send you an invite to GW as well.

Have fun in Transition!
