Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

Dear Hastings-Sunrisers,

I have just been informed that the Community Small Grants are now open for applicants, and the DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS MARCH 31ST! For those of you who are unfamiliar with Neighbourhood Small Grants, they are grants of $500 to $1500 that are administered by the neighbourhood houses, with the funds coming from the Vancouver Foundation.

You can use the grants for pretty much any community event or project imaginable - as long as it does something to bring people in your neighbourhood together or it make it a better place. The grant applications are extremely easy to fill out (all they need is a paragraph describing what you intend to do).Last year, VV members in Kits were really on top of this and ended up getting a total of $4500 in grants that they used for projects ranging from collaborative gardens to a canning collective to block parties. The seed money for the Styro-Free Challenge project also came from a neighbourhood small grant! Only individuals can apply for the grants, not organisations, but this is a perfect opportunity for VV members to apply for grants that they can use towards Transition-related projects!

Residents of Hastings-Sunrise can find more info and download the application form here: http://www.kiwassa.ca/wp-content/uploads/Community-Small-Grants-App...

Applications must be sponsored by two or more people in your area, so we encourage you to use this forum to connect with your neighbours around potential community projects and get those applications in! If you need a hand in writing the grant, coming up with ideas or finding partners, contact admin@villagevancouver.ca for assistance.

Cheers,
Jordan

Thank you Jordan for putting the information above. Just to clarify some things, the Community Small Grants ($500-1,500) are sponsored by the City of Vancouver through the Hastings Legacy Fund. These grants are managed and distributed by the Hastings North Community Partners Group (HNCPG) and you can learn more about the HNCPG group from their new web site. www.hastingsnorth.org

You can  download applications and get more information from the web link above or you may pick them up at Hastings Community Centre, Kiwassa Neighbourhood House or Hastings School Community Programs Office. The deadline for Community Small Grants as Jordan indicated it above is on March 31, 2012.

The applications and promotional materials for Neighbourhood Small Grants ($50-500) sponsored by the Vancouver Foundation are not out yet because the deadline dates are extended this year. We are currently working with Vancouver Foundation on a couple of new and exciting changes and we will notify you as soon as the application forms are available.

Thanks for the clarification Meseret! It was a bit confusing this year because some neighbourhood houses, such as Mount Pleasant, have started accepting applications for Neighbourhood Small Grants at the same time as I noticed Kiwassa advertising the Community Small Grants, so I assumed that the grants were simply being organised slightly differently this year. It's great to know that NSG is still available as well!

I would like to do another 'Tour de Coop' this year... I think a small grant for snacks and promotional materials would be appropriate.

I would need a collaborator, as I work full time and travel for work. (But hopefully NOT during the tour this year!)

Any takers?

Oh, and I'm technically in Grandview -Woodland. The neighborhoods are adjacent, and surely there are coops in Hastings Sunrise....
