    Hi,
I'm new to Village Vancouver, and live in Hastings Sunrise.
My neighbours and I are organizing "Green Up 2010".
A community event to share green ideas and dream for the future. I'm wondering if someone would like to set up a Transition Initiative table or give a short presentation.
    Please email us at greenup@playvancouver.com

    Thanks,

I keep thinking that the London Drugs rebuild might be an opportunity to piggyback on corporate need for good feeling to garner some community gains. I envision some kind of outdoor community space - turning the green strip in the back into gardens or public art...anybody else have ideas? My inspiration is that lovely mural of an Italian square on the jewelry store.

    Hi Folks

Just to let you know that Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House has an experiential garden at Clinton Park. There are no spaces to rent or use but what we do we try to grow different things each year to get people interested and thinking outside of the box and we have speakers come in to talk about the soil and nutrients, planting, composting etc. All these are Free info sessions. If anyone is interested please email garden@froghollow.bc.ca and we can put you on our mailing list for these free garden series

Deadline to sign up for the April classes is Monday, April 11th.

    Thanks,

I work at Kiwassa Neighbourhood House as a Food Program Coordinator and have started local food day once a month in the Daycare. I am wondering if anyone knows a backyard chicken or chicken farmer that could come and talk to the kids...maybe bring a chicken or can we come and look in your backyard??

We are at Oxford Street and Nanaimo...so we will serve chicken that day and local veggies.

If you have ideas about people or places to take the kids that would be great

You are all very welcome at my place - 2 minutes walk from Kiwassa.

We have 4 chickens and a big food garden.

  • Alyssa K

I also have two very friendly chickens ("lap chickens") at 4th & Commercial, but I will be out of the county until to mid- to- late- June. (Once they forgive me for my long absence, I could bring them somewhere, or people are always welcome at my house to cuddle with the girls.)

    Hey There Hastings Sunrise!

Our group is growing...and looking good...let's meet regularly...anyone up for bingo, potlucks, or farming? We can do natural building in the summer, but what shall we do in the winter? Let's get the kids to meet too...any ideas?

  • Michelle Livingston

    Hi everyone!
Hope we can all get together soon, maybe a potluck?
My husband and I are new to the neighbourhood and would love to host something but we're just living in a small garden suite. Perhaps when the weather warms up we can make use of the backyard!

I've also got a fairly large raised garden box looking for some veggie love, if anyone is interested in helping me get it started in the spring? :) I know its a ways off but I'm pretty excited about it!

    Happy holidays!
  • Jill Whitebear

That is a great idea. I have been talking to people and it seems like a January Potluck would be perfect for us all to meet and get to know each other. Count me in. Sunday afternoon is good, as long as it isn't the second Sunday as we have a regular Permaculture meeting out at Terra Nova from 2-4. Everyone is welcome there by the way and feel free to contact me for a ride. I have 3 seats extra and we generally go straight there and back from east van. Also I heard the benches are ready for the Pender and Penticton Mini Park. There is still room there for 2 more beds, but in this case it is build your own try to make it similar to the ones already there... There is some soil on the parking lot. If anyone gets a bed built, I would be happy to help preparing the soil.

  • Brennan Wauters

Hey folks from Hastings Sunrise - you're welcome to come to our holiday party this Saturday night. We'll be cooking on our rocket stoves so you can see them working. We'll have two of them running. If you are connected by facebook, take a look at the invite: http://www.facebook.com/#!/events/126138800829287/

Feel free to bring drinks and food. We're mostly a vegitarian/vegan house. B.

  • Alyssa K

I'm in too (even though I'm 'techinally' Grandview Woodland). After dark would be better for me - which shouldn't be tooo hard since its dark most of the time now. Also, I suggest to anyone who doesn't see enough 'action' in their own VV neighborhood, to join your neighboring neighborhoods! I belong to 3!

  • stacy bestard

January potluck sounds great...I will be there.

  • Prices

I am also very interested in being there, as I haven't been able to make it out so far!

  • Jill Whitebear

    Hello,

Do we have a venue for a potluck? January is quickly going to become February... How would Saturday afternoon into evening be for people?

Our house is better for warmer weather partly outdoor gatherings...any hosts available?

  • Jana Ronne

    Hello,

Yup, January just disappeared on us...

Our house is unfortunately not meant for winter gatherings either - not that much space:(

If there is enough interest for people to meet end of February, I could look into booking a room at the Kiwassa House or Hasting Community Center. Any other place suggestions? Free would be bonus:)

  • Village Vancouver

    A suggestion...

There's the upcoming VV Activist's meeting on the 31st (not in H-S, but close to, we scheduled it partially with HSVillage in mind). Some HSVillagers are  already coming, and we thought might be a good place to help things get going, esecially as there will be time for members to get together with others from their neighbourhoods.

It might be a good time/space to get the ball rolling and create some momentum going into a H-S February gathering.

  • Village Vancouver

Glad to hear you're OK, Megan, and yeah, lots going on for me too!

In a  couple days, we'll send the potluck address to everyone who's RSVPed on the event post. Hope you can make it! Cheers! Ross

  • Jill Whitebear

    Hi Chris,

Thanks! This is actually a larger event which already has a venue. Please see events for Jan 31, and you will find it. Hope to see you there.

  • Village Vancouver

    Hi Chris,

I've just sent you an invite for the VV Activist gathering on the 31st - hope you can make it!

    Cheers,

    Ross

  • Village Vancouver

    Hey Chris,

Oh, I see you've already RSVPed. Great! A  number of H-S members have now confirmed (plus some maybes), so a good op to talk about H-S Village.

I can't make the 31st meeting, but would be happy to host a meet-up through the Hastings Community Centre & Seasons of Food. You can contact me after you make some plans on the 31st via email hastingsfoodsac@gmail.com. Thanks, Reanne.

this event has been rescheduled to April 14th...as a Seedy Saturday open to any village members, and Vancouver residents...

  • Jill Whitebear

    Hi Village,

I have created an event on April 14th. I would like to have a planning meeting sometime soon. Could our village host a small seed and plant exchange? Email me personally or leave a message here if interested in planning. Thanks!
  • Jana Ronne

    Hi Jill,

I would be interested in helping out/participate.

Keep me in the loop, please.

  • Jill Whitebear

Awesome Jana. That would be great! I will. Thanks!
  • Jill Whitebear

  • Jill Whitebear

Hello everyone! The seed and plant exchange is next week. If you have any extra plants to share, please bring them by. We have lots of sugar pumpkin seeds, some rapini, and the beginning of a seed library. Kids are especially invited. Trampoline in the front yard is available to use. http://www.villagevancouver.ca/events/hastings-sunrise-seedy-saturd... Hope to see lots of villagers passing through!
  • Jill Whitebear

Awesome turn out for the Plant and Seed exchange! Many people did not know about Village, and we directed them here... a couple on bikes dropped by from Pitt Meadows, lots of neighbourhood Mamas, and Rico from the racetrack who says ask for him for raw horse manure at the track... might be good for making a rapid hot compost pile... works very well for the garden if you have extra energy! I have booked Kiwassa Saturday June 2nd 9am - 12... for gathering, exchange and workshopping... save the date, eh

  • Jana Ronne

I agree - the seed exchange was really neat and we got to meet lots of new people who really liked the idea and were really happy to join in and contribute next year:)

  • Alyssa K

So Sorry to have missed it! I've penciled in the June date!
