Event Description

Setting the Context for Change Exploring the Pathways to Ecological Sustainability

Explore the cultural and economic causes of the various Global Crises. We investigate key underlying western values, beliefs and institutions, and the blocks to social change. Is the fundamental root cause of our global crises over-population, personal/spiritual, political, lack of efficiency in our systems, or institutional – the growth economy? This exploration leads to understanding the possibilities for a positive future.

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Gain a comprehensive overview of the forces that have created both the global ecological crises and the global social justice crisis.
  • Learn tools to better analyze our situation.
  • Gain a deeper grasp of the institutional and systemic changes necessary for dealing with the global crises.

Kathryn Cholette has a BA in Anthropology and Sociology, SFU, and a Master of Liberal Studies, SFU, where she explored institutional and ideological pathways to sustainability.  She has Social Service Worker Certificate, a Permaculture Design Certificate, and studied New Economics at Schumacher College.   Kathryn has been an activist for 25 years, first focusing on social justice, Bioregionalism, and green cities, and more recently on political ecology and New Economics. She is a Left-Green who served as the Federal Leader of the Green Party of Canada from 1988-1990.  She co-coordinated the Tin Wis Coalition of First Nations, unions, and environmental groups; worked with Vancouver’s New City Network; edited the Green Cities Section of the national magazine New City.  Presently, Kathryn works with Village Vancouver ‘Transition Initiative’ and the New City Institute.
