W2TV: Jean Swanson on Community Benefits Agreements...

Jean Swanson is the co-author of the Carnegie Community Action Project’s Community Vision for Change.

Her position is that starting a Community Benefits Agreements (CBA) strategy at this time will undermine the position of many resident based groups. Currently, efforts are directd to stop gentrification and get 5000 singles out of their decrepit hotels and into 100% social housing. She calls for more homes for homeless and low-income families. These are demands that only civic, provincial and federal governments can meet.

City council’s decision on January 20th to stop towers is an amazing opportunity – a pause where we can push for the ideal, not P3 housing which will gentrify the DTES.

Taped at the Community Dialogue:
What are Community Benefit Agreements?
Will they help our community?
Thursday, March 3, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
St James Anglican Church (E Cordova St @ Gore)

Co-hosted by the DTES Neighbourhood Council and the Vancouver Urban Core Community Workers’ Association.

CCAP says: No buy-outs! No crumbs from DTES condo developers! No negotiations!

NO MARKET DEVELOPMENT in the DTES until low income housing and other needs are met by governments.
