It's a relief to see someone blogging on this, though I don't find it simple. The viewpoint of seeing it as 'extrinsic' and 'intrinsic' is interesting. George Lakoff writes extensively on this using "Strict Father" worldview and "Nurturant Parent" worldview in his book Don't Think of an Elephant. Daniel Siegel writes about how our brains are made to interact with other brains, and how infants need interaction, not stimulation. Marshall Rosenberg also talks about this in NVC. So does Thom Hartmann.

I would love to have a group to discuss this. I think it's so important. If fact, from what I understand, the US rightwing politicians' understanding the importance of values has, since the 1980's been quite conscious and their strategies have been brilliant. They understand that reason is ruled by emotion, and they keep throwing the progressives red-herrings to distract them - and succeed admirably. <sigh>

There are several key strategic lessons here for VV, and for our political and social awareness in all manner of areas. This is cerebral, albeit simplistic in detail, but it drives home a point we'd be well to consider and act upon, for the future of humanity and all other species within our ecosystem.
This article does not directly explain to groups like ours what to do, but rather sets a fundamental context for policy and outreach. A key word from the article above was kindness, something we see precious little of in our daily lives here. It is a lack of empathy that explains all manner of social ills, ecological collapse, and economic stress in Vancouver.
Heartless politics is inhumane, and unsustainable. Intrinsic-values-driven appeals to building a truly great society are the way forward.
