Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

Need some help in getting started. Any advice would be great. If anyone doesn't mind in coming over to my place to help get me started, that would be great. I could visit established gardens, etc. I live in Dunbar 604-228-1599 or cell 778-231-4014. I'd be able to help out with any 'community gardening' going on. I recently retired in June (high school teacher) and have time to get involved. Again I know very little, but bit by bit I'm turning into my father! Bill Magee in Dunbar

Hey Bill, welcome! great to hear that you're in Dunbar - please join our Dunbar Neighbourhood Transition group here. We've held a few successful events and we're hitting the ground running - we hope to start a skillshare series and film nights soon. We plan on having a winter gardening workshop in the near future, which would be a great opportunity for you to learn and connect with other gardeners in the neighbourhood. Join the group and stay tuned. Also, we always welcome new organizers to the team. Let us know if you're interested in getting more involved at any point. Cheers, Shelby

It is never too late to learn, albeit it's not easy at any age. Remember, it took humans almost 4 million years to figure out how to farm, and we are still not terribly good at it, as far as sustainable planting, crop rotation, and watering are concerned.

But hey, it's great fun to try to grow your own food, and if you fail, it's not a matter of life or death...yet.

Village Vancouver has nearly constant gardening classes taught professionally, and we trying to organize gardening groups by neighbourhood, so you can find a neighbour in the same boat, or maybe just a few steps ahead. The secret food gardens in Vancouver are legendary!

Village engages individuals, neighbourhoods & organizations to take actions that build sustainable communities & have fun doing it. Join us!
