Village Vancouver

Vancouver's Leader in Transition toward Strong, Resilient, Complete Communities

Hello all.

I thought I would put it out there that OSRL (Open source Resilient Living), based in Burnaby, with any luck will have a CEB (compessed earth brick) press soon.  I have the design just about done and soon will have drawings to share with everyone.  In the interest of raising some funds for more projects, I would be willing to rent the machine out to group members for a good rate.

This is a great way to support earth friendly building practices and local groups that promote such things.

Here is a link to the build page for this press:

Thanks

Hello Randy.

To be clear I only recommend Stabilized Compressed Earth Bricks for use in construction projects.  This technology has been proven all over the world.  It's only here in North America that you rarely see it, I think.

Stabilized bricks typically have 10-20% cement added to the dirt mixture.  You make your bricks, stack them on a pallet and wait 2 weeks for them to cure.  This press can generate up to 20 tons of pressure while forming  bricks, all done manually.

Interested folks can keep an eye on our Wiki page where we will eventually have lots of information on this earth friendly alternative.

At some point, a local demonstration could be organized.  Perhaps a "Make your own bricks" work session to show off the press.

Damien, Do you have a project in mind to demonstrate the stability and durability of compressed earth brick, especially put into service in a rain forest?  This will be crucial to drive adoption.
