Profile Information

In which Vancouver neighbourhood or other community do you live?
Mount Pleasant
Please tell us which areas of Transition interest you. For example: growing more food/urban agriculture, relocalizing our economy/local currency, Permaculture, transit, energy efficient buildings, the arts, urban homesteading, preserving seed diversity, potlucks, outreach, organizing events, community-building, having fun while saving the world, or...
urban homesteading and urban ag., public art, greening buildings (moss graffiti, living walls!), community events, and lots lots more :)
There's a saying that "Transition is not a spectator sport". It's true! Village Vancouver runs on people power, and engaging in activities and projects together helps us accomplish more. Which groups, networks, neighbourhood villages, or projects do you think you might be interested in getting involved with? And what knowledge, skills, resources or other assets can you bring to the mix? (Don't be bashful!)
I'm not sure as of now, but I love to cook, garden, get people together, brainstorm, listen and connect to people.
What would you like to see improved in Vancouver or in your community regarding sustainability or resiliency? Do you have an idea for a new Transition project or activity?
i've got to think about this! sorry!

Don't feel like answering all the questions now? No worries, just tell us briefly why you're interested in joining at this time, and you can come back and update your profile later.
I would love love love to become more involved. I have so many idea and ideals that I think would be lovely to see in the city, and I see so many fascinating ideas and would love to contribute and be a part! :)

Nicole,

Welcome to the bigger Village, and the Main Street 'hood.  We have lots going on, from seed-saving collectives to beekeeping groups, local organic food distribution, tending hens, urban farmers (and brewers), and..most recently...starting a new tradition in Vancouver: collaborative gardening.

The latter is a community garden but with ONE plot managed by ALL, not many plots managed by individuals.

We have tentatively been approved to create an urban collaborative garden at the corner of Main and 23rd Ave.  We are working out the details with the City, who are deathly afraid they will lose the plot to a permanent food garden (and not be able to cash out of the property for over $2 million).

Meanwhile, come to our monthly potlucks at Little Mountain Neighbourhood House; the next one is on February 7th, details of which will now be sent to you as a member of this Village neighbourhood group.

Nicole,

It's great to have you join us!  We need your energy and enthusiasm.  Check out our site thoroughly.   We are still in the process of moving things around and building our menus; it's a work in progress.

Meanwhile also check out the Main Street Neighbourhood, the village within Village Vancouver that is a true walkable village.  We encourage people to go everywhere and do everything, but sometimes it is nice to have events close to home where you can meet real neighbours.  This page (click here) is where the Main Street folks organize events together as a 'not so exclusive' subgroup.  To avoid sending our 1500 members emails about far-away events, Village Vancouver is organized by village, and joining a nearby village (or where you might have a close friend) is the best way to "relocalize."  So, go to the Main Street Neighbourhood page and select the + Join button to get additional notice of more local happenings.

Speaking of which, we host a potluck dinner and something special every month at Little Mountain Neighbourhood House (on Main Street at 24th Ave).  This coming month, on Tuesday December 6, we are going to bring in a bee hive and talk about how urban beekeeping is literally helping to save a keystone species of pollinators.

Feel free to bring something small or nothing at all.  We always have plenty, and we understand life's pressures are not distributed equally.  Even just bring some juice.

Maybe someone will bring baclava (if the bees don't mind)!

Transportation

If you have to leave your village, how will you get where you want to go? By car? Preferably not, both for your wallet and the earth’s sake. This category is for all discussions relating to how we all get around.

Housing

A human right? After food, most feel shelter is the most important necessity. A place of shelter is also the start of a community. This category is for all things relating to shelter, housing, affordable housing, homes, renewable heating systems, green buildings, heritage, and our built environment in general.
