Profile Information

In which Vancouver neighbourhood or other community do you live?
Downtown, Downtown East Side
If you don't live in Vancouver or are in another neighbourhood or community we did not list, please tell us where home is.
Downtown-West End
Please tell us which areas of Transition interest you. For example: growing more food/urban agriculture, relocalizing our economy/local currency, Permaculture, transit, energy efficient buildings, the arts, urban homesteading, preserving seed diversity, placemaking, potlucks, outreach, organizing events, community-building, having fun while saving the world, or...
My business is weatherization and renovation services. I focus on energy efficiencies by way of multiple practices. I use a blower door and thermal imaging camera to locate and repair/ prevent air leaks in homes. I am working with the city of Vancouver to provide green jobs, reduce energy consumption, increase homeowner comfort, and help people my community. I want to share what I know in the building industry, help where I can to reduce fossil fuel consumption, and provide alternative testing of new ways to combine old & new products to extend the lives of the things we use.
I mean " energy efficient buildings, community-building, having fun while saving the world, food/urban agriculture, outreach" :-)
There's a saying that "Transition is not a spectator sport". It's true! Village Vancouver runs on people power, and engaging in activities and projects together helps us accomplish more. Which groups, networks, neighbourhood villages, or projects do you think you might be interested in getting involved with? And what knowledge, skills, resources or other assets can you bring to the mix? (Don't be bashful!)
I am new and will look deeper into the programs and activities soon but for now I would say i am interested in discovering more about the vision.
As far as things go I have a varied background: University degree in business management, minor in Real-estate and marketing, In my home State I qualify to be an Appraiser, Broker, Inspector, and Contractor. I can build anything anyway you want it. I grew up on a farm with a 100 acres of farm land, 10+ acre pond, a river that runs through it, and more than 1800 acres total where I use to live off the land. I have ideas about multiple level gardens, and how to bring the wonders of my property in Mississippi to Vancouver and the big cities around the world. with time
What would you like to see improved in Vancouver or in your community regarding sustainability or resiliency? Do you have an idea for a new Transition project or activity?
lower building emissions, more fruit & nut bearing trees, big changes in building codes, increased use of Thermal imaging and Blower door testing to ensure a proper job has been performed on construction projects,

Projects...hummm I have ideas but would like to get introduced to the organization before commenting.

Don't feel like answering all the questions now? No worries, just tell us briefly why you're interested in joining at this time, and you can come back and update your profile later.
I am providing a presentation on Weatherization on Feb 7, 2012 at the Little Mountain Neighborhood House. I am excited to be meeting the group and the individuals who make up the group. What better way to become connected to other Village members & open a dialog in the group than to join the web group.

Great to have you join us, David.

There is much involved in lower-carbon living, with our homes providing the greatest opportunity to save the earth AND live healthier and more comfortably.  I love your description of your childhood farm, and there is really no reason Vancouver cannot revive its ponds and streams (aka "blueways") that once criss-crossed the city and provided both recreation and habitat for all.  What is lower carbon than playing in a stream or taking a swim in a natural lake, especially if both are near your home?

See you tomorrow night.

Randy
