*Making Sauerkraut (low cost workshop; FREE for seniors)

Learn to make traditional, fermented sauerkraut in this Village Vancouver ElderGreens workshop w/Alyssa Kohlman. Fermented vegetables have many health benefits, including live enzymes, readily available vitamins and minerals, and probiotics -and sauerkraut/other fermented vegetables are suitable for all (vegetarian, vegan, Paleo, gluten free). Bring a wide-mouth 500ml mason jar, cutting board, large knife, and large bowl (optional). Participants will go home w/a jar of customized sauerkraut to ferment @home.


Adults/families w/children 10 years+ are welcome - minors must be accompanied by a caregiver. We'll have a Seed Library present - you can get some free seeds for your garden or swap or donate some .

Organized and led by seniors, VV ElderGreens brings seniors, youth and others together to share food & gardening skills and wisdom through workshops and other activities. All ages welcome, please contact us if you're interested in getting involved.

ABERTHAU GARDEN PROJECT
Located behind the Mansion, off of NW Marine Dr, & hosted by Village Vancouver, the garden includes VV’s Demonstration Permaculture Garden, the WPG Preschool Garden and art/garden projects by artists-in-residence LocoMotoArt: Laura Lee Coles and Rob Scharein.Emphasizing permaculture design elements, including a small hugelkultur, an herb spiral, planting pollinator attractants, and saving open pollinated seeds, the garden offers fun, inclusive social, educational, culinary and cultural activities for community members. Enjoy free/low-cost Wednesday evening cooking, fermenting & preserving demonstrations, inc. sauerkraut, kefir,and tastes of Korea and India, gardening workshops like early summer gardening, native edibles walks and the seed savers club.
In the garden, newer gardeners garden collaboratively alongside more experienced gardeners at our Saturday work parties, providing a learning experience for everyone. Free and family friendly! Explore the grounds, & learn about this year's gardening activities (new volunteers welcome) and workshops. Tours, fermented food & kefir samplings, wild edible weeds talk & walk, harvest straw art, LocoMotoArt's heirloom green bean garden, permaculture and gardening info. Kids - take a picture with WeBee!
