Introducing Copley Commons!

The Environmental Youth Alliance has partnered with the City of Vancouver to work with community members in creating a new urban agriculture site on the former grounds of Richard Copley's historical orchard. In keeping with the site's history, the focus of the project will be perennial fruit culture and celebration.

The site has been vacant for over 30 years, and is the grassy field that lies between Walker St. and Copley St, just north of Vaness Avenue and the Skytrain.

The development of this site will be a blend of community tended plots, social gathering space, a productive berry patch and orchard, and many other possibilities that have not yet been detailed.

OPEN HOUSE:
We are holding an open house to gather input and ideas from community members and begin planning for fall planting activities. Whether you want to be involved in further planning and activities, or are simply curious about the site, please join us. Refreshments will be provided.

Please contact me if you have any questions, concerns or comments.

Also - check out our webpage for more information and a map of the site:

http://eya.ca/copley-commons.html

We are really hoping for strong community engagement with this project and our Open House is the first of many steps towards creating a beautiful, productive, perennial urban agriculture site that will be a precious resource to the community around it and the city as a whole!

Thanks! And I hope to see you at our Open House!

Hi Helen,

I don't know how to respond to messages sent to the whole group, but we do have a color ink jet printer if you need to borrow it. We can do it this weekend if you have the transfer paper.

It looks like we won't be able to pickup the folding table after all, so we just have the canopy to store for now. If anyone wants to do this, check freecycle and contact them from there. Thanks. cylia

Yes, we are open to it.  This blurb is what I've been sending to enquiring vendors.

"The spring fling is our garden celebration in which we invite and support local business, artisans, crafters, etc. to showcase their wares, etc., basically for free. Should the vendor feel that s/he has made enough profit, a donation to the garden is appreciated. That said, s/he would need to bring all of her/his own stuff (since we have few canopies and tables to share) and will need to confirm by April 15 so we can ensure there is a space available for her/him on the site plan.  The event is from 12-3 pm and the vendor is expected to show up at 1130 am to setup and ask for Cylia, the site coordinator.  There are no bathrooms on site, however, we have contacts with our neighbors. For further info, contact cylia@telus.net   Thank you for being part of our celebration!!

ok, so far.  Looking for more vendors -- farmers selling local produce, crafters and artisans, local entertainment.

Cool...if you don't find storage in the village, we can find storage elsewhere. Do you need anything else for May 1st? (For instance, other tables, use of cargo bike to deliver stuff to site?)

We'd likely want to use canopy, maybe table for Car Free Day neighbourhood demo village at Main Street Festival, and possibly for folk fest in July.

Yep, I received one through Freecycle and would be happy to share it for VV events.  cylia

Hey Cylia,

By canopy, do you mean a tent w/out walls? Does it fold into a carrying bag?

Cheers, Ross
