Hi folks,
I am still interested in finding a lovely new place to live...

Something bright, that would welcome me, my 4 hens and a cat...preferably with some garden space, though I'd sacrifice that for chicken space.

Hi everyone,
I am thinking of moving some time in the next few months... can you please keep me in mind for any places that you know of or hear of that would be amenable to chickens?

Prefer Grandview-Woodland or Hastings-Sunrise neighborhoods. A ground-floor suite would be preferable. A yard is a necessity.

1BR+, 4 hens and one cat. Would consider a room-mate for a place with more than one bedroom.

Hi all,

What do people think of having a monthly pot luck for Grandview-Woodland (modeled after Main Street's)? I think a great theme for one soon would be winter tool prep! (Bring your tools: we'd have linseed oil, tool oil, and sharpeners on hand?)

Hello,

I have a rather large worm bin free to a good home (or organization). It is about 2'x18"x18" tall. Has bottom drains and screened side vents. I actually scored it here on VV maybe a year (or more?) ago. It is just too big for me!

The only caveat is I would like to harvest the castings, and I don't have enough worm-friendly food to lure the worms to one side to do so (I think there is an element of the worms not cooperating as well!)

I would also like the bin to go to a cooperative, or at least multi-person household, as these worms eat a LOT. I cannot keep up with them.

Anyone could put this to good use, or know a good place for it, please contact me. We'll have to work together on the harvesting and if someone wants to learn how to set up a new bin there will be an opportunity there as well, since I will be making a smaller bin for myself as part of this process.

If anyone wants to start their own smaller bin, there are also plenty of worms here to make several new smaller bins (and keep the big one going). Could almost do a worm workshop if there is interest.

Dear neighbours in Grandview-Woodland, aka The Drive,

Have you ever used a seed library before? A seed library is something that can be as simple as a box from which people can take seeds they need, leave extra seeds they have, and even return a new generation of seeds that they have saved from things they have grown themselves!

Village Vancouver's portable seed libraries in neighbourhoods like Main Street, Cedar Cottage and Kitsilano have been big hits this past year, with many thousands (millions?) of seeds coming in and going out. It's amazing to think of all the food that these seeds went on to produce this season!

Good news: this year we received a Greenest City Neighbourhood Grant to put towards the creation of a seed library in our neighbourhood! We will do this in collaboration with the Grandview-Woodland Food Connection and host the library at the Britannia Community Centre for maximum accessibility. The seed library will go well with other neighbourhood food initiatives taking place in the area, including a number of community gardens and GWFC's community kitchen and bulk buying programs, among others.

To make this seed library successful, we need your help! In the short term, we are looking for a local graphic designer who can help create a poster and simple logo by the end of September to help promote the seed library; a small honorarium is available for this. We're also looking for people who would like to help:
-Construct and decorate the seed library
-Procure and organise seeds
-Produce instructional materials for the seed library

We are aiming for a meeting of interested helpers in late October, tentatively Oct. 29th. Please contact Jordan at jordan@villagevancouver.ca if you'd like to get in on this!

Hi all -- I have an offer to pass on that's too good to refuse. In December I did a drain tile replacement around a house at Grant and Salisbury. Afterward, Lara, the owner, became very interested in converting the mess of a yard into an urban farm. So she had us turn it into just that- minus the crops. That's where you come in.
If this sounds familiar, I think she posted this a while ago when it was a messy yard and talked tentatively to a couple of folks. It's now fertile, tilled, mulched (see pictures). I even went and spread some horse manure at the bottom of the beds. So get in touch with her if interested!

Hello.

We recently redid our drain tiles which trashed our garden. Given that our yard was a blank canvas after that we re-thought how we wanted to make use of the space and became very interested in CSA programs.

Our space has now been levelled and landscaped and is ready for a farmer.

https://vimeo.com/36210612
https://vimeo.com/36239939

What I want to do is to offer our land for food production to a group or an organization who is running a business (for profit). In trade I would like a box of food a week during growing season.

If you are interested in farming the space let me know. We are located in the commercial drive area.

Dear Grandview-Woodlanders,

Apologies for inaccurate information posted earlier with regards to Neighbourhood Small Grants - I had posted a discussion saying that the deadline to apply was March 31st, when in fact that was for a separate grant program (Hastings North's Community Small Grants program). Now I am happy to announce that the Neighbourhood Small Grants are open for applications for real, and the deadlines are April 30th (east of Commercial Drive) and May 18th (west of the…

Now I am happy to announce that the Neighbourhood Small Grants are open for applications for real, and the deadlines are April 30th (east of Commercial Drive) and May 18th (west of the Drive).

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Neighbourhood Small Grants, they are grants of up to $500 that are administered by the neighbourhood houses, with the funds coming from the Vancouver Foundation. You can use the grants for pretty much any community event or project imaginable - as long as it does something to bring people in your neighbourhood together or it make it a better place. The grant applications are extremely easy to fill out (all they need is a paragraph describing what you intend to do). Each application needs to be sponsored by two people who live in the appropriate catchment area.

Last year, VV members in Kits were really on top of this and ended up getting a total of $4500 in grants that they used for projects ranging from collaborative gardens to a canning collective to block parties. The seed money for the Styro-Free Challenge project also came from a neighbourhood small grant! Only individuals can apply for the grants, not organisations, but this is a perfect opportunity for VV members to apply for grants that they can use towards Transition-related projects!

Where to apply depends on which part of Grandview-Woodland you live in. Those who live east of Commercial need to apply for the East Vancouver Neighbourhood Small Grants, . The rest of those who live west of Commercial need to apply under the Carnegie/Raycam/Strathcona program.

And good news: while there use to be a two-block strip north of 1st Ave but between Commercial and Victoria that was not covered by any program, this oversight has now been fixed and all residents of Grandview-Woodland are now elligible to apply for the grants!

Here's a reminder of some ideas that have come up so far:

-Alyssa could lead us in a fermenting workshop (by the way, I've made a great connection with the program coordinator of the Lion's Den Recreation Centre at Commercial and Adanac recently, and as a result we now have access to a spacious kitchen facility that would be perfect for this and other cooking/preserving workshops!)

-We have a few people with experience in natural/cob building among us, so another idea is to construct an earth oven somewhere. Maybe even in our new Woodland Park Community Garden?

-We could get someone knowledgeable about foraging to lead us in a foraging workshop/expedition

-We could construct a community root cellar so that people can extend the period over which they can consume self-grown food.

-We could plant a food forest (perhaps in Salsbury Park?)

-Our neighbour Sasha Liang has also offered some workshops she could teach, including:

*Herbal Medicine Walks....let me know what you think and I could keep it simple down to say 3 plants...I can scour the britannia grounds first to see if there's some close stuff and pinpoint. I create teas & tinctures in this class so it's fun for everyone.

*Raw food in 10 minutes - usually a hit...3 recipes, minimal tools, fan faves.

*Raw for kids (not babies/toddlers but 4 and up) breakfast, lunch, dinner and 1 snack covered.

*Edible Beauty - topical and ingestible beauty regimens with natural products that can be used on the skin as well as taken orally....

*Non alcoholic blender beverages for the summer - usually a hit with the "recovery" crowd as well as those with alcohol allergies and blood sugar issues.

*I also conduct sound healing with crystal bowls

Now is the time to take the step towards making these ideas a reality! Please use this discussion forum to share your ideas, look for collaborators, and coordinate the applications.

Cheers,
