Beekeeeping is part of the Village Food Group and Neighbourhood Food Network

Dear beekeepers and other beekeeping enthusiasts,

I encourage you to become part of a neighbourhood group where you can meet in person with other beekeepers regularly (or with people interested in beekeeping). Steve and I are part of a group of about 10 beekeepers that was created last spring. We had a couple of get-togethers last year and it was invaluable (and fun!) to learn from each others’ experiences. So far I have responses from people who would like to start a group in the Commercial Drive area, Dunbar and North Vancouver. I suggest creating groups based on where you live - having people that live near by who can lend a hand (or hive box if your bees swarm!) can be very helpful.

Please note that during Anna's absence, you may contact Steve Sandve (beekeeper) or Cylia for questions and help furthering ideas related to beekeeping.  (Click on the links at their names above to open up their Village page, and write them a note on their Comment Wall.)

http://www.honeybeesuite.com/  good resource.

Trying to locate some physical structures to protect beehives. Stone structures seem to work well.

Hi this is my first year as a beekeeper with my very own bees (after many many years of reading up on beekeeping). I am looking for someone who I might be able to shadow/visit and see how their hive is doing in case I am missing out on some things or atleast to know how I am doing with my bees. So far things are looking good and I am enjoying it very much but I think it would be valuable for me to make some connections with someone close to my neighbourhood (Southlands, Dunbar). I am also very interested in watching someone rescue a swarm (come next spring!). Please let me know if you are interested in being bee buddies and/or if you are a swarm removal expert and are willing to let me tag along for a swarm capture next spring. Thank you! Feel free to contact me via my email address oh.amapola@gmail.com.

If you are looking to start beekeeping right away (not as exciting at the spring start and possibly a little toughter) check out the link

Saw "The Ailing Queen" on Sunday. Awesome, inspiring movie, Quebec based about a forward thinking beekeeper and his year.

Just ordered our 2 VIFF tickets.  It was $12 per ticket, plus a $3 handling fee per order, plus $2 membership fee.  I've posted a notice on the Vancouver Meatless Meetup site for a group get-together for a veg. dinner, then film.

Wondering if there are any bee enthusiasts who would like to meet for a quick dinner and/or then go to the film "The Ailing Queen" on Sunday, October 9th -- 645 pm showing. I would be interested in meeting you, hearing your stories and what you have learned about bees this year. Email me directly if interested. I would prefer to dine at a veg.friendly cafe.

I have just checked the VIFF site and there are plenty of tickets still available so you may want to buy your ticket in advance. Here is the link: http://filmguide.viff.org/tixSYS/2011/filmguide/Title/detail

Hi all,

Check out this film at VIFF.

The Ailing Queen
[AILIN] (Feature)
Canadian Images
(Canada, 2011, 90 mins, HDCAM)
In French with English subtitles
Directed By: Pascal Sanchez
PRODS: Hugo Latulippe, Éric Deghelder
CAM: Geoffroy Beauchemin, Pascal Sanchez
ED: Natalie Lamoureux
MUS: Serge Nagauchi Pelletier

Director Pascal Sanchez's examination of the worldwide efforts to battle bee-colony collapse concentrates on young, energetic beekeeper Anicet Desrochers. Working through the seasons to strengthen his colonies and spread the word about his methods, Desrochers is a pioneer of a more ecological method of managing bees and the fields they pollinate--and upon which the earth's entire agricultural production depends.

“The early passages focus on Desrochers' efforts to ship healthy queen bees to fellow beekeepers suffering under their own collection of ailing queens. Hive loss, or the sheer death rate of bees, has varied from region to region in recent years, but a mortality rate as high as 60% has hit many keepers. The film patiently reveals Desrochers as a serious student of his craft as he explains the signs of healthy and sick colonies, methods of restoration, and some of the underlying problems stemming from the excessive use of chemicals and pesticides, which he thinks have propelled the crisis. Desrochers' efforts to create bees naturally resistant to viruses and diseases has already won him and his modest farm in the Hautes-Laurentides region of Quebec international regard, but Sanchez's humble filmmaking style never drumbeats that we're watching a hero--just a guy who loves bees and nature, and understands the science guiding them both. “--Robert Koehler, Variety
