We'll have a pollinator seed library where you can get/swap bee friendly seeds, info on the Pollinator Project, info on our pollinator related Permaculture projects, beekeepers Brian Campbell and Lori Weidenhammer will be present, etc.

There's some room for other folks to display. If you're interested, please contact me at ross@villagevancouver.ca.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Cheers,
Ross

P.S. The demo village is a large undertaking - about 25 tents plus open space this year of community projects. Village has no paid staff and needs lots of volunteers to help transport, setup, at the booths, and breakdown.
Hi everyone! I was wondering if we could get a group of beekeepers together for the GE Free BC rally this Wednesday September 18th. Municipalities will be voting on whether to ask the provincial government to legislate BC as a GE/GMO free area. It would be great if we could make some "beekeepers in support of a GE Free BC" signs and to show support against the threat that genetically modified crops pose to bees.
Hi there folks,

As part of a "Compassionate Communities" project put on by Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House, a small group of people started talking about a way to visit and get to know others interested in edible gardens, chicken coops and bee hives. We came up with the idea of a "crawl" and applied for a Neighbourhood Small Grant...and got it! So now we have to organize the thing.

Here's the email I just sent out to our current mailing list (see below). Especially after reading the post about a possible summer gathering, I'm hoping some of you might be interested in getting involved with this event - as participants, hosts, volunteers, whatever you like. If you are, it's probably easiest if you send me your email address directly. I'll also post regular updates here, through I'll spare you the organizing ones.

Hope to meet some of you in person real soon!

Eggsellent News! We have secured 500 buck buck bucks from the Neighbourhood Small Grants Program (no poultry sum!) to launch the first ever East Van Chicken Coop and Culture Crawl.

Just to refresh your memory (or for those who are hearing about this for the first time), we are planning a one-day self-led tour event of neighbourhood chicken coops, beehives, and edible gardens...with a few workshops about making and using edible cultures thrown in for good measure! The event will be in mid to late September and will cluster in different areas of the Frog Hollow and Cedar Cottage neighbourhoods.

So, with cash in hand, it's time to start hatching a plan!

We are looking for chicks (and roosters) with ideas and talent in the area of:
· Finding coops and gardens – recruiting locations of gardens, hives and coops for the tour; contacting locals to see if they will be involved
· Map Making - we hope to have youth involved in doing some community mapping and producing the final works-of-art for use on the day of the tour
· Coordinating volunteers – particularly recruiting and organizing greeters at various garden, hive and coop locations (especially multi-lingual volunteers!)
· Marketing and advertising – people interested in helping get the word out: making posters, setting up a website/blog etc
· Organizing workshops – we hope to offer a number of short workshops on making food cultures (yogurt, kin chi, sourdough etc)

We especially need people who can speak another language in addition to English, so we can reach out to as many participants as possible!

Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House is hosting a planning session on Tuesday June 5th This will be a great chance for us to brood on the possibilities, so please consider joining us at 6:00pm to find out more. We're looking for a few more people to take on leadership roles - and this would be a great place to start.

So, here's to laying the ground work for an eggciting new venture! Hope to see you on Tuesday!
Survey for homesteading store, to include beekeeping suppliestag:www.villagevancouver.ca,2012-01-24:4670368:Topic:664702012-01-24T08:41:37.416ZRick Havlakhttp://www.villagevancouver.ca/profile/RickHavlak

The title pretty much says it, but I'm running a survey this week for my proposed urban homesteading store. I'd like to carry beekeeping supplies and equipment, among other things. If anyone has time to complete the survey by this weekend, it would really help me out and help the project along. Find it at www.HomesteadersEmporium.ca.

Cheers!

I'm interested in how many people are feeding their bees now. I know some are against it. If you are feeding what bee food and what kind of feeder? Also, I had a low mite count this year and understand that a number of Vancouver beekeepers experienced the same. Did anyone have a mite problem?…

Well, this spring has been pretty cold...how are people's hives getting on? Is everyone feeding their hives thus far? My new packages installed April 1st don't appear to be doing all that well, numbers are down. How do we cope with the weather, as beekeepers?

Hello,

I need to move my hive to a new location (a little further than 2 miles). If anyone has tips or experience moving hives I'd love your advice on how to make the trip smooth. It's not a long distance, but packing these little fellows up is a bit daunting.

Thanks,

Hello, I am interested in keeping bees, however, I am wondering if anyone can give me some more info on the bylaws for hobby beekeepers in the Lower Mainland. Is it necessary for everyone keeping bees to register with the Ministry of Agriculture and Land? Are there regulations on selling the honey my bees would produce? I have not been able to find any information on this. I am located in Langley. Thank you for any help you can offer.
