The Cucumber Tree – Boyhood memories of life in Vancouver in the 1940s and 1950s
Speaker: Bob Ross

Cucumber TreeBob Ross, author of The Cucumber Tree, will speak on boyhood memories of growing up in Kerrisdale in the 1940s and 1950s.  During the War years families were forced to be creative in the absence of a fighting father. The immediate post war years saw children, ever resourceful at creating their own fun, exploring the threads of nature which still existed in Vancouver while breaking out into the real world through family trips to various parts of the province.  The fifties, during which time the author studied at a traditional private school with all the expected obligations, presented its own realities. Television, Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley presented a different story. The 1950s Cold War fear was pervasive and powerful particularly in the minds of youth. All these contradictions worked on the mind of a young person but there was always Len Norris to ground us with his wonderful sense of humour.
