Event Description

Help build sub-irrigated planters for the school garden

Following on the success of the Trafalgar Elementary School Garden, we are now implementing a similar garden at Maple Grove Elementary School.

Come and help the teachers, parents, students and other volunteers at Maple Grove Elementary School to implement the first phase of their permaculture school garden.  We will be building 9 subirrigated planters that the students and their teachers will use to learn about growing food in a sustainable way (no-till, water-conserving, no or minimal off-site inputs).

By helping the school, you will also learn the principles of subirrigation and how you can build your own, similar, planters at home.  These planters are perfect for decks, patios, etc and dramatically reduce the amount of time spent watering (I water my deck planters about 5 times during the growing season).

The work party will be from 1pm to 5pm at the school.  Stay as long or short as you like.

We are also looking for the following tools to build the planters.  If you have a tool from the list below and would like to come help out, please bring it along!

Tools we need to build the planters:

- marking pencils/pens
- tape measures (imperial)
- chop saw
- work gloves
- extension cords
- electric drills (corded and cordless)
- 4 ft level
- 2 ft level
- large permanent markers
- utility knives
- staple guns
- caulking gun
- white chalk
- heat gun
