Event Description

The Earth Day Parade & Celebration is being organized by students from the Vancouver region as a part of "Youth for Climate Justice Now" with the support of a variety of local organizations.

It is our hope to recapture the roots of earth day as a celebration and a vehicle for environmental change. The parade event will be a celebration of positive change with a focus on global warming and social justice. Please bring your costumes, your art, your bike, your strollers, your friends, your grandmother... you get the idea. We will be marching up Commercial Drive with large colourful banners, costumes, pedal-powered floats, dances, and chants focusing on the effects of climate change. We are asking all participants to help us with this! Dress up in vibrant clothing, create large banners with messages; let your imagination run wild.

On the morning of April 22nd, 2011 at 11am. We will meet at Grandview Hwy. and Commercial Dr. just North of Commercial-Broadway Skytrain station. The parade will proceed northwards on Commercial Drive and on to Brittania Secondary School’s field, where we will be hosting an earth day festival.

The festival will feature activities such as school/art competitions, music, a family tent, hands on activities, and guest speakers.

This is Vancouver’s first Earth Day Celebration organized by youth for all youth and the families of Metro Vancouver. We hope to raise awareness and show our concern about the effects of climate change as it is at the forefront of environmental issues today. Youth are inheriting the world and feel the need to take action to not just make Vancouver, but the global community a healthier and better place to live in.

We want Vancouver's youth to be part of the international movement to stop global warming. We need to act now. Global temperatures can't rise 2 degrees! That would be a tipping point. Let's do something about it.

This will be the most fun you ever had saving the planet. :) Please spread the word and invite your friends to the event!
